Several regions across India are experiencing a diverse range of weather conditions, prompting alerts from the India Meteorological Department (IMD). While some states are bracing for heatwaves, others are preparing for heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and dust storms. These weather patterns are expected to persist until May 18, 2025, and in some cases, even longer.

Heatwave Conditions:

West Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh are currently under a heatwave warning. West Rajasthan is expected to experience heatwave conditions from May 15 to May 19, while Uttar Pradesh is under a similar warning from May 15 to May 18. Maximum temperatures in Uttar Pradesh have already reached around 43°C, exacerbating the difficulties of daily life. The IMD has advised residents in heatwave-affected regions to stay hydrated, avoid outdoor activities during peak afternoon hours, and take necessary precautions against heat-related illnesses.

Rainfall and Thunderstorms:

Northeast India, including Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura, is likely to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning. This weather pattern is expected to continue for the next five days. South Peninsular India is also expected to receive rainfall with thunderstorms, with isolated heavy showers in Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu over the next three days. Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, coastal Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana are expected to get isolated heavy rainfall. Interior Karnataka will witness similar conditions until May 19, while Kerala and Mahe are likely to experience heavy rainfall between May 18 and 19.

Dust Storms:

Northwest India, including Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and west Uttar Pradesh, will experience dust storms with strong northwesterly winds blowing at 25–35 kmph. West Rajasthan will also see dusty weather until May 18. Delhi-NCR is expected to experience cloudy skies and sporadic rainfall between May 16 and 18, with maximum temperatures hovering between 39°C and 42°C. Thunderstorm activity and gusty winds of up to 50 kmph are possible.

Regional Forecasts and Advisories:

  • Delhi-NCR: A mix of hot weather and occasional gusty winds with chances of thunderstorms are expected from May 16 to 18. Light drizzle is predicted for May 16, but significant relief from the heat is expected only after May 19.
  • Punjab: A yellow alert has been issued starting May 18, with chances of light rain and thunderstorms.
  • Uttar Pradesh: Some areas may receive light rain within the next 48 hours due to a weather system forming over the Bay of Bengal. However, this is unlikely to cause a major drop in temperature.

The IMD has urged people to stay indoors during lightning activity and avoid vulnerable waterlogged areas. Farmers are also advised to monitor weather updates closely and plan agricultural activities accordingly.
