Udhampur district police have intensified their efforts to combat bovine smuggling, resulting in the arrest of 99 smugglers and the rescue of 618 animals in the last five months. Between January and May 2025, the police registered 87 cases related to cattle smuggling and have taken a firm stance against individuals involved in these illegal activities.

In addition to the arrests, Udhampur police have invoked the Public Safety Act (PSA) against four habitual offenders involved in bovine smuggling. The PSA is an administrative law that allows detention without charge or trial for up to two years in some cases. This measure underscores the seriousness with which the authorities are treating this issue and their commitment to maintaining law and order in the region. Those booked under PSA include repeat offenders who, despite previous arrests and FIRs, continued to engage in activities posing a threat to public peace.

The crackdown on bovine smuggling has also led to the seizure of 70 vehicles used for the illegal transportation of animals, and the registration of 20 more vehicles have been canceled. These actions are aimed at dismantling the infrastructure that supports bovine smuggling and deterring others from engaging in such activities.

Several instances highlight the efforts of the Udhampur police in curbing bovine smuggling. For example, in late May 2025, police teams in Chenani and Udhampur foiled separate bovine smuggling attempts, rescuing 22 animals and arresting seven smugglers. Similarly, in early April 2025, police intercepted vehicles at Jakhani Naka point, leading to the rescue of 10 bovines and the arrest of three smugglers.

The Udhampur police's proactive measures against bovine smuggling reflect a broader effort to combat crime and maintain public order in the district. These efforts not only prevent the illegal transportation and trade of animals but also contribute to communal harmony and prevent activities that could disrupt peace in the region.

The police spokesperson highlighted the determination to continue the drive against the menace to ensure a peaceful society. The successful operations demonstrate the commitment of the Udhampur police to tackle bovine smuggling and related criminal activities effectively.
