Parag Jain, a 1989-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer from the Punjab cadre, has been appointed as the new Secretary of the Research and Analysis Wing (R&AW), India's external intelligence agency. He is set to assume office on July 1, 2025, succeeding Ravi Sinha, whose tenure concludes on June 30. Jain's appointment is for a fixed term of two years.

Jain is known for his expertise in intelligence gathering and counter-terrorism operations. He currently heads the Aviation Research Centre (ARC), a wing of R&AW. During his time there, he played a vital role in "Operation Sindoor" by collecting intelligence on the Pakistani armed forces. This operation involved monitoring activities of the Pakistani armed forces.

Throughout his career, Jain has held several important positions. He previously served as SSP, Chandigarh, and DIG Ludhiana. He also has experience working in conflict-prone regions like Jammu and Kashmir, where he contributed to the Centre's counter-terrorism strategy. Additionally, Jain has represented India in Canada and Sri Lanka.

Sources describe Jain as an "unassuming officer". His extensive experience in intelligence and counter-terrorism is expected to bring a fresh perspective to R&AW. He takes charge at a time when R&AW faces significant challenges.
