Addressing fan theories suggesting he orchestrated Cavill's exit long before it was officially announced, Gunn clarified that he wasn't overseeing DC Studios when he was promoting The Suicide Squad in 2021. He didn't express interest in the position until Peter Safran approached him in late 2022. Gunn has emphasized that his Superman project was always intended as a new story, not a continuation of Cavill's storyline.

The "Black Adam" Cameo

Henry Cavill's brief return as Superman in a cameo appearance in Black Adam created a confusing situation. According to reports, Cavill was told by Warner Bros. to announce his return as Superman. However, this occurred before Gunn and Safran took over DC Studios. Gunn later clarified that "We didn't fire Henry. Henry was never cast".
