In Krishnanagar, West Bengal, a 19-year-old college student, Ishita Malik, was shot dead in her home on Monday afternoon by a man she knew. The accused, identified as Debraj Singh, 23, allegedly entered her residence and opened fire, while her family watched helplessly.
According to police reports, Ishita had recently stopped communicating with Debraj, who she met while studying in Kanchrapara. Spurned by this sudden change, Debraj went to her home in Krishnanagar around 2 p.m. on Monday. Ishita's family tried to prevent him from entering, but he brandished a gun and forced his way inside. He then went to Ishita's room, locked it from the inside, and shot her at point blank range.
After the shooting, Debraj fled the scene with a country-made revolver. Ishita was immediately rushed to the hospital, but she was declared dead upon arrival. K Amarnath, the Superintendent of Police, Krishnanagar, confirmed that Ishita was found in a pool of blood.
Police have launched a search for Debraj and are investigating the incident. According to a senior police officer, Debraj is a resident of Kanchrapara in North 24 Parganas district. The officer stated that Debraj and Ishita were acquainted because she used to visit Kanchrapara for her studies, but their communication had ceased, possibly due to a dispute. The police are exploring all possible angles in the case.
The incident has caused a stir in Krishnanagar, a usually peaceful town. The crime occurred near the office of the Nadia district superintendent of police. The police have sent Ishita's body for post-mortem.
