Celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay has revealed that he recently underwent surgery to remove skin cancer. In an Instagram post on Saturday, August 30, 2025, the 58-year-old shared photos of the scar on the side of his face, urging his 19.2 million followers to wear sunscreen.
Ramsay disclosed that he had basal cell carcinoma removed. Basal cell carcinoma is a non-melanoma form of skin cancer that starts in the top layer of the skin. According to the Mayo Clinic, it typically appears as a white, waxy lump or a brown, scaly patch on sun-exposed areas such as the face and neck. The NHS notes that it is mainly caused by ultraviolet light from the sun and sunbeds.
In his Instagram post, Ramsay expressed his gratitude to the medical team at The Skin Associates for their "fast reactive work". He shared two photos: one showing a large bandage placed on the side of his jaw, beneath his ear, and another displaying the stitches after the removal of the carcinoma. "Grateful and so appreciative for the incredible team at The Skin Associates and their fast reactive work on removing this Basal Cell Carcinoma, thank you!" Ramsay captioned the post. He then added, "Please don't forget your sunscreen this weekend, I promise you it's not a facelift. I'd need a refund…".
The post quickly garnered supportive messages from fans and fellow celebrities. TV judge Robert Rinder posted a heart emoji, while Ramsay's daughter Holly wrote "love you dad" with a heart emoji. Cancer Research UK replied to the post, stating, "Glad to hear you're doing well, Gordon, and thanks for raising awareness of how important it is to stay safe in the sun. Seek shade, cover up and apply sunscreen regularly and generously". Many fans praised Ramsay for staying in good spirits and thanked him for raising awareness about skin cancer prevention. Others wished him a speedy recovery.
This health update comes after Ramsay's bicycle accident in June 2024 in Connecticut, where he sustained severe bruising across his torso. He emphasized the importance of wearing a helmet at that time. In late December 2024, Ramsay shared an update on Instagram, revealing that the bruising had since healed.
