The West Bengal Assembly witnessed significant disruptions on Thursday, September 4, 2025, as ruling TMC and opposition BJP MLAs engaged in heated exchanges, leading to suspensions and forceful removal of legislators. The turmoil erupted during a discussion on a government resolution addressing alleged atrocities against Bengali migrants.
The disruption escalated as Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee prepared to speak on the resolution. BJP legislators began raising slogans and questioning the suspension of Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari, which had occurred on September 2. These actions drew strong protests from the treasury benches.
Mamata Banerjee addressed the House, accusing the BJP of being against Bangla-speaking people and unleashing "linguistic terrorism". She stated, "I condemn BJP for their persecution of Bengalis… BJP will face inevitable defeat, for no party that wages linguistic terror against Bengalis can ever win Bengal". She also labeled the BJP as "vote chor" and corrupt. Banerjee further alleged that the BJP was obstructing discussion on attacks against Bengali migrant workers in BJP-ruled states to suppress the truth. She questioned why the BJP was preventing her from speaking and asserted that while her party was not against Hindi or any other language, the BJP was demonstrably anti-Bengali, displaying a colonial and dictatorial mindset aiming to turn West Bengal into their colony.
Amidst the continuous sloganeering, Speaker Biman Banerjee suspended BJP chief whip Shankar Ghosh for the remainder of the session. The situation underscores the intense political rivalry and linguistic tensions prevalent in West Bengal. Mamata Banerjee has previously accused the BJP of harassing, detaining, and removing Bengalis from voter rolls in BJP-ruled states. She has framed the protection of Bengali language and identity as a central battle against the BJP, vowing to continue the fight until the party is ousted from both the state and the Centre. In July 2025, she launched a movement against what she termed the BJP's "terrorism" against the Bengali language, urging supporters to hold rallies every weekend to protest attacks on Bengalis.
