Prime Minister Narendra Modi has recently engaged in discussions with top European Union leaders to push for the swift conclusion of the India-EU Free Trade Agreement (FTA). During a joint telephone call with European Council President Antonio Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Modi emphasized the importance of the India-EU strategic partnership and its role in addressing global challenges.

The leaders reaffirmed their commitment to finalize the FTA negotiations by the end of the year. They also discussed the implementation of the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEEC). Building upon the EU College of Commissioners' visit to India in February, Modi extended an invitation to Costa and von der Leyen to attend the next India-EU Summit in New Delhi at a mutually convenient date, potentially in early 2026.

The discussions also covered various aspects of bilateral cooperation, including trade, technology, investment, innovation, sustainability, defense, security, and supply chain resilience. The leaders welcomed the progress made in these critical sectors, highlighting the deepening ties between India and the EU.

In addition to bilateral matters, the leaders exchanged views on regional and global issues, with a particular focus on the conflict in Ukraine. Modi reiterated India's consistent support for a peaceful resolution and the early restoration of stability in the region. Von der Leyen acknowledged India's important role in bringing Russia to end the conflict and helping create a path towards peace.

The India-EU FTA is expected to significantly boost trade and economic ties between the two regions. According to European Commission data, the EU is India's second-largest trading partner, with bilateral trade in goods reaching €120 billion in 2024, representing approximately 11.5% of India's total trade. India, in turn, is the EU's ninth-largest partner, accounting for 2.4% of the EU's total goods trade.

The FTA negotiations were revived in June 2022 after being paused for eight years. Both sides have expressed optimism about the progress made and are working towards resolving outstanding issues. The agreement aims to create new opportunities for businesses and promote economic growth in both India and the EU.
