In his first public statement since leaving office, former Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar has congratulated his successor, C.P. Radhakrishnan, on winning the Vice Presidential election. Dhankhar expressed confidence that Radhakrishnan's "vast experience in public life" would lead the office to "attain greater veneration and glory".

Radhakrishnan, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) candidate, secured 452 votes, defeating the opposition's B. Sudershan Reddy, who received 300 votes. The election was held following Dhankhar's resignation in July, which he attributed to health concerns. However, some members of the opposition have suggested there may have been other reasons for his departure.

Dhankhar's message to Radhakrishnan stated, "Your elevation to this august office reflects the trust and confidence by the representatives of our nation". He conveyed his best wishes for Radhakrishnan's success and service to the nation.

C.P. Radhakrishnan's election as the 15th Vice President of India marks a significant transition in the country's parliamentary leadership. As Vice President, he also assumes the role of Chairman of the Rajya Sabha. His extensive political and administrative experience is expected to bring stability and enhance parliamentary discourse.

Radhakrishnan has had a long and varied political career. Born in Tamil Nadu, he began his political journey as a student leader and has been involved with the RSS and Jan Sangh. He was twice elected to the Lok Sabha from Coimbatore. He has also served as the Governor of Jharkhand, Telangana, Puducherry and Maharashtra.

The Vice Presidential election saw a high turnout, with 767 of 781 eligible Members of Parliament casting their votes. Out of these, 752 votes were deemed valid. The election was conducted through a secret ballot using a system of proportional representation.

Radhakrishnan's victory was anticipated, given the NDA's majority in Parliament. However, the margin of his win has led to speculation about potential cross-voting. While the BJP has claimed that Radhakrishnan garnered support from opposition members, the opposition has pointed to an increase in their vote share compared to the previous election.

Jagdeep Dhankhar served as the Vice President of India from 2022 to 2025. Prior to that, he was the Governor of West Bengal from 2019 to 2022. He has also been a Union Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs and a Member of Parliament. Dhankhar's resignation in July 2025 triggered the recent election.

C.P. Radhakrishnan's election is seen as a significant moment for Tamil Nadu, as he is only the third person from the state to hold the office of Vice President. His election is expected to send positive signals ahead of the Tamil Nadu assembly elections in 2026.

As the new Vice President, Radhakrishnan is expected to bring his experience and leadership to the Rajya Sabha. Observers are keen to see how his leadership will influence the legislative agenda and political landscape.
