The family of Pradeep and Kapil Negi, two brothers from the Sirmaur district of Himachal Pradesh, is facing a difficult time following the death of their father. The brothers recently garnered national attention after marrying the same woman, Sunita Chauhan, in July 2025, reviving the age-old "Jodidaar Pratha" tradition of the Hatti community.

The wedding, a vibrant three-day affair filled with local folk songs and dances, took place in Shillai village and drew hundreds of guests. The marriage brought into focus the practice of fraternal polyandry, locally known as "Jodidara," which is rooted in preserving ancestral land and maintaining family unity. The Hatti community, residing in the Trans-Giri region along the Himachal Pradesh–Uttarakhand border, has historically practiced this custom, also found in other areas like Jaunsar-Bawar in Uttarakhand.

The brothers defended their decision to marry Sunita, stating that it was a voluntary arrangement with the full support of their family and community. They emphasized that the "Jodidar Pratha" has been followed for generations and is not exclusive to their region. Pradeep, who works in the state's Jal Shakti Department, and Kapil, a chef working abroad, explained that their marriage aimed to keep their family together and continue their love for each other. Sunita also stated that she was aware of the tradition and made the decision to marry the brothers without any pressure.

However, the family's joy has been overshadowed by the recent passing of their father after a prolonged battle with cancer. The brothers shared their grief on social media, expressing the profound impact their father's absence has had on their lives. In a heartfelt tribute, they wrote, "Papa, life hasn't been the same since you left. You were not just a father, but our strength, our support, and world". They further added that his words continue to guide them and that they feel his blessings even after his passing.

The news of their father's death has cast a pall over the entire village of Shillai. The brothers' social media post received numerous messages of condolence and support from people touched by their loss. While their marriage initially sparked widespread discussion and even some criticism, the family is now united in grief, with the community rallying around them.

The unexpected turn of events has shifted the narrative surrounding the Negi brothers from a celebration of cultural tradition to one of personal loss and remembrance. Their story serves as a reminder that life is often a mix of joy and sorrow, and that even in the midst of unique and sometimes controversial choices, families must navigate the universal experiences of love, loss, and resilience.
