Chandrapuram Ponnusamy Radhakrishnan, often referred to as C.P. Radhakrishnan, is set to be sworn in as the Vice President of India on September 12, 2025. The former Governor of Maharashtra and Jharkhand, Radhakrishnan, a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), won the vice-presidential election on September 9, 2025, defeating opposition candidate B. Sudarshan Reddy by a margin of 152 votes.
Radhakrishnan's victory was anticipated, considering the BJP and its allies' majority in Parliament. Out of 781 electors, 767 MPs participated in the election, with Radhakrishnan securing 452 votes against Reddy's 300. A total of 752 votes were deemed valid, while 15 were declared invalid.
The election was necessitated by the resignation of the former Vice President, Jagdeep Dhankhar, who stepped down in July 2025 due to health concerns. The voting process was conducted in a free, fair, and orderly manner, according to the Rajya Sabha Secretary General. Prime Minister Narendra Modi was among the first to cast his vote, along with several Union Ministers.
Born on May 4, 1957, in Tiruppur, Tamil Nadu, Radhakrishnan has been associated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and Bharatiya Jana Sangh since his youth. He holds a Bachelor of Business Administration degree. He was elected twice to the Lok Sabha from Coimbatore. He also served as the state president of the BJP in Tamil Nadu from 2003 to 2006. Before being nominated as the Vice President candidate, Radhakrishnan served as the Governor of Maharashtra from July 2024 to September 2025 and the Governor of Jharkhand from February 2023 to July 2024. He also held additional charges as Governor of Telangana and Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry for brief periods in 2024.
Radhakrishnan's political journey began as a student leader, and he has since utilized politics as a medium to serve the public. His election as Vice President is seen as a reward for his long-time service to the party and his efforts in expanding the BJP's presence in Southern India.
