Sergio Gor, a close political aide to Donald Trump, is undergoing the confirmation process to become the next U.S. Ambassador to India. At 38 years old, Gor would be the youngest American ambassador to India if confirmed.

On August 22, 2025, President Trump announced his nomination of Gor as U.S. Ambassador to India, also naming him as a special envoy for South and Central Asian affairs. This decision arrives during a period of strained relations between India and the United States, exacerbated by planned tariff increases. Gor is currently the director of the White House Presidential Personnel Office and will remain in that role until his confirmation by the U.S. Senate.

Gor's nomination has been viewed as strategically significant. India's Ambassador to the U.S., Vinay Mohan Kwatra, has publicly supported Gor's nomination, calling it a sign of the importance and priority of India-U.S. ties. Kwatra believes that Gor's appointment signifies a commitment to strengthening the relationship between the two countries. The U.S. India Strategic Partnership Forum (USISPF) also conveyed that Gor's confirmation is in the national interest of both countries and will greatly benefit them. They emphasized his experience and the President's confidence in him will enable him to be an effective liaison between Washington and New Delhi.

Gor's background is diverse. Born in Tashkent, he immigrated to the United States and graduated from George Washington University, where he was involved in conservative causes. His career has spanned from being a college activist to a key advisor to Donald Trump. He co-founded Winning Team Publishing with Donald Trump Jr. and held senior advisory roles in MAGA Inc. and Right for America. In November 2024, Trump appointed Gor as the director of the White House Presidential Personnel Office.

The Senate Foreign Relations Committee in Washington, D.C., is holding confirmation hearings for Gor. Support for his nomination has come from various high-ranking officials, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Vice President JD Vance, FBI Director Kash Patel, and Under Secretary of Defence for Policy Elbridge Colby.

His nomination comes as India and the U.S. are showing signs of resolving trade tensions. Recent remarks by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Donald Trump suggest that negotiations are underway to unlock the "limitless potential" of trade ties.
