Amidst the ongoing legal battle surrounding the vast estate of the late industrialist Sunjay Kapur, old interviews of his former wife, Karisma Kapoor, have resurfaced, offering glimpses into their relationship before their marriage. In one such interview, Karisma shared her perspective on Sunjay Kapur being a "very rich man" and how that factored into her decision to marry him.

In the interview with journalist Subhash K Jha, Karisma addressed the perception of her then-fiancé, Sunjay Kapur, as a "very rich man". Karisma responded, "I don't know about that". She elaborated that he had his own business and his father's business to manage. Karisma stated she would continue her career, but more discreetly, as she was looking to enter a new phase in her life. After dedicating nearly thirteen years to her career, she felt it was time to prioritize personal happiness. Karisma mentioned reducing her workload but intended to continue doing good projects and her television serial, along with a couple of films per year.

The couple's families had known each other for many years, and they were childhood friends who grew up together. Karisma's mother and Sunjay's mother had been friends since they were teenagers. Karisma mentioned that all the children from both families grew up together, and she was particularly close to Sunjay's sisters, going to school with them. She felt their bond was so strong that it seemed destined to lead to marriage. Karisma revealed that although they grew up and spent time apart, their childhood friendship eventually turned into a love story years later. After her experiences, her parents were eager for her to settle down, and she found the right person in Sunjay.

Karisma and Sunjay's wedding was a traditional Sikh ceremony in Mumbai in 2003. However, their marriage faced challenges from the beginning, leading to their separation in 2014 and a finalized divorce in 2016 after a contentious court battle. Karisma made allegations of domestic violence and dowry harassment against Sunjay and his family. As part of the divorce settlement, Sunjay was to pay Karisma ₹70 crore and purchase bonds worth ₹14 crore in their children's names, providing a ₹10 lakh annual interest payment. Karisma also received Sunjay's father's house in Khar transferred to her name.

Sunjay Kapur passed away on June 12, 2025, at the age of 53, due to a cardiac arrest while playing polo in England. His death triggered a family dispute over his ₹30,000 crore estate. Karisma's children, Samaira and Kiaan, have filed a petition in the Delhi High Court, challenging Sunjay's will and alleging forgery by their stepmother, Priya Sachdev, to gain control of his assets. They are seeking their rightful share of their father's estate, claiming that as legal heirs, they are entitled to a share of his property under the Hindu Succession Act, 1956. The High Court has ordered Priya Sachdev Kapur to present the disputed will.

Amidst the legal proceedings, Sunjay's sister, Mandhira Kapur Smith, has voiced her support for Karisma and her children, stating that Karisma is her best friend and expressing her disapproval of Priya Sachdev. Karisma's lawyer has also raised doubts about the authenticity of the will and the valuation of the estate, dismissing reports of it being ₹30,000 crore as a "press creation". The legal battle continues, with the focus on determining the validity of the will and the rightful distribution of Sunjay Kapur's assets.
