Amid ongoing unrest in Nepal, an Indian tourist bus returning from Kathmandu was attacked near the India-Nepal border on September 9, 2025. The incident occurred near Sonauli, and the bus was carrying 49 Indian tourists who were returning from a visit to the Pashupatinath Temple in Kathmandu.
Protesters allegedly targeted the bus, pelting it with stones and causing damage, including shattering windows. Several passengers, including women and elderly individuals, sustained injuries in the attack. Some passengers also reported that their belongings, including bags, cash, and mobile phones, were looted.
Following the attack, local authorities admitted the injured to a hospital in Kathmandu. The Indian Embassy, with assistance from the Nepalese government, arranged for the remaining passengers to be flown back to India on a special plane.
The bus driver, Ramu Nishad, stated that the attack was unprovoked and that the protesters did not care about the women and elderly people on board. Another bus driver, Raj, mentioned that the mob attacked while he was heading back to India and that they broke all the glass panes with stones and looted belongings.
The incident has prompted Indian authorities to increase security and vigilance in the border areas of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and West Bengal. These bordering districts are on high alert to prevent any untoward incidents or illegal movements across the border.
The attack occurred against the backdrop of widespread unrest in Nepal, which includes anti-government protests led by the Gen Z population. These protests have been fueled by anger over issues such as corruption, nepotism, and a government ban on social media. The demonstrations have resulted in violent clashes between protesters and security forces, leading to casualties and widespread disruption. As of September 12, 2025, reports indicate that at least 51 people have died during the protests.
The situation in Nepal remains tense, with the army reclaiming the streets after the protest violence. Discussions are underway to find a consensus interim leader to fill the political vacuum created after the government was toppled.
