The woman accused of driving the BMW that fatally struck a senior finance ministry official in Delhi has been taken into custody and booked for culpable homicide. Gaganpreet Kaur was arrested on Monday after being discharged from the hospital where she was treated for injuries sustained in the accident. The incident occurred on Sunday afternoon near the Delhi Cantonment Metro station, claiming the life of Navjot Singh, 52, a Deputy Secretary in the Department of Economic Affairs. Singh's wife, Sandeep Kaur, who was riding pillion, suffered serious injuries.

According to eyewitnesses, the BMW, allegedly driven by Gaganpreet with her husband seated beside her, first struck the central verge before colliding with Singh's motorcycle near Metro pillar no. 67. The impact caused the motorcycle to crash into a bus. Investigators suspect the car was being driven at high speed, leading to Gaganpreet losing control. The police have registered a case of culpable homicide and are probing the matter under Section 238 of the BNS Act, which relates to destruction of evidence or providing false information to shield an offender. Gaganpreet has been booked under sections of culpable homicide not amounting to murder and for attempting to destroy evidence after the accident.

Sandeep Kaur, in her statement to the police, alleged that Gaganpreet ignored her repeated pleas to be taken to the nearest hospital after the collision. Instead, the BMW occupants allegedly took them to a smaller hospital in GTB Nagar, approximately 22 km away. Sandeep claimed that her appeals for immediate care at closer hospitals, such as AIIMS or the Army Base Hospital, were ignored. The FIR also notes Sandeep's statement that she repeatedly requested to be taken to a nearby hospital, as her husband was unconscious and needed immediate treatment. She believes her husband could have been saved if he had received timely medical attention.

Adding to the controversy, it has been revealed that the hospital where the victims were taken is linked to Gaganpreet's family. A police officer stated that Gaganpreet's parental home is in the same locality as the hospital, and her father is known to one of the hospital's owners. Van driver Mohammad Gulfam, who transported the injured to the hospital, corroborated Sandeep's account, stating that the accused couple insisted on taking them to the hospital nearly 22 kilometers away.

The police are investigating whether there was an attempt to tamper with evidence and are scrutinizing CCTV footage from the area to reconstruct the sequence of events. Gaganpreet's blood samples have been sent for alcohol testing, and investigators are verifying the validity of her driving license. A team from the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) visited the accident site to examine the circumstances leading to the crash and inspected the vehicles involved. The case has been registered under FIR No. 240/25, sections 281, 125B, 105, and 238 of the BNS Act.
