Gaganpreet Kaur, the 38-year-old woman accused of driving the BMW that caused the death of Navjot Singh, a Finance Ministry official, has been sent to two days of judicial custody. The Duty Magistrate, Akanksha Singh, ordered the judicial custody after authorities stated that Gaganpreet's custodial interrogation was not required. Following the court's order, Gaganpreet was taken to Tihar Jail.
The incident occurred on Sunday when the BMW allegedly driven by Gaganpreet Makkad hit the motorcycle Navjot Singh and his wife, Sandeep Kaur, were riding on Delhi's Ring Road in Dhaula Kuan. Navjot Singh, a 52-year-old Deputy Secretary in the Department of Economic Affairs, died from his injuries. His wife, Sandeep Kaur, sustained serious injuries and is currently receiving treatment.
Following the accident, instead of taking the injured couple to a nearby hospital, Gaganpreet allegedly transported them to a hospital in GTB Nagar, approximately 19-22 kilometers away from the accident site. This decision has sparked controversy and raised suspicions, with the victim's family alleging a deliberate delay in medical assistance. Sandeep Kaur stated that she repeatedly pleaded to be taken to a closer hospital, but her requests were ignored. The family also alleged that Gaganpreet and her husband received medical attention before Navjot and Sandeep, despite their critical condition.
Gaganpreet claimed she acted out of panic and only knew of the hospital in GTB Nagar because her children had been treated there during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, police are investigating a potential connection between Gaganpreet's father and one of the owners of Nulife Hospital in GTB Nagar. Police sources also indicated the possibility of evidence tampering related to Gaganpreet's medical reports from the hospital.
Gaganpreet has been charged with culpable homicide not amounting to murder, destruction of evidence, and rash driving. Police have registered a case under Section 238 of the BNS Act, which pertains to the destruction of evidence or providing false information to shield an offender.
In addition to sending Gaganpreet to judicial custody, the court has issued notices to the Delhi Police and the victim's family regarding the bail application filed by Gaganpreet. The court has directed them to file their replies by September 17, when the matter will be heard.
Eyewitnesses reported that the BMW, bearing registration number 0008, first hit the central verge before colliding with Singh's motorcycle. The impact caused the motorcycle to crash into a bus. Investigators suspect that the car was speeding and that Gaganpreet lost control. Gaganpreet's husband, Parikshit Makkad, was also in the car at the time of the accident and has been named in the FIR. Both Gaganpreet and her husband sustained injuries in the accident.
