Rajeev Verma, 1992 IAS batch, becomes Delhi's chief secretary: Leadership change in the capital's administration.

Rajeev Verma, a 1992-batch IAS officer from the Arunachal Pradesh-Goa-Mizoram and Union Territory (AGMUT) cadre, has been appointed as the new Chief Secretary of Delhi. The Union Ministry of Home Affairs made the announcement on Sunday, September 28, 2025. Verma is set to succeed Dharmendra, a 1989-batch IAS officer from the same cadre, who will be retiring on September 30, 2025. Verma is expected to assume his new responsibilities on October 1, 2025.

Prior to this appointment, Rajeev Verma was serving as the Advisor to the Administrator and Chief Secretary of Chandigarh. He was appointed to that position on February 7, 2024. Before his tenure in Chandigarh, Verma served as the Chief Secretary of Puducherry.

Verma's career in the Indian Administrative Service spans over three decades, with experience in various government roles at both the central and state levels. He has held key positions in ministries such as Defence, Finance, Urban Development, Health, and Transport. His expertise includes finance, administration, urban development, and public policy. He has also served in different capacities in Goa and Mizoram.

Born on December 12, 1966, in Uttar Pradesh, Rajeev Verma is an alumnus of the University of Roorkee (now IIT Roorkee), where he earned a degree in Computer Science, followed by an M.Tech in Computer Science. He joined the IAS at the age of 25 after successfully clearing the UPSC Civil Services Exam in 1992.

Verma's previous postings in Delhi include Principal Secretary and Commissioner (Finance) in the city government. He also served as the Finance and Revenue Secretary between 2018 and 2022. Additionally, he has held important positions in Delhi's Transport Department. From 2013 to 2017, Verma worked as Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Defence. He has also held positions in transport, sports, and health at the national level.

During his time in Chandigarh, Verma focused on initiatives for a cleaner, smarter, and more transparent city. This included directing public-facing departments to obtain ISO 37001 Anti-Bribery Management System certification and championing digitization in education.
