A century of influence: Examining the legacy of India's prominent Hindu nationalist organization on its 100th anniversary.

The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), a prominent Hindu nationalist organization in India, is marking its centenary this year on Vijayadashami. Founded in 1925 by Dr. Keshav Baliram Hedgewar in Nagpur, Maharashtra, the RSS was conceived as a volunteer-based organization. Its primary objective was to cultivate cultural awareness, discipline, service, and a sense of social responsibility among its citizens.

Over the past century, the RSS has grown to become the world's largest voluntary organization. It currently has over 127,367 shakhas (branches) spread across 51,570 locations in India. The organization's influence extends across ideological, political, and social spheres within the nation.

The RSS's centenary celebrations are being observed with various events and addresses. RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat delivered the annual Vijayadashami address at the organization's headquarters in Nagpur. The address carries significant weight this year, coinciding with the completion of the RSS's 100th year. During his address, Bhagwat emphasized the importance of national security in the face of both internal and external threats. He also stressed the need for India to adopt an indigenous and self-reliant approach while maintaining diplomatic and economic relations with the world, cautioning that dependence should not become a compulsion.

Bhagwat also highlighted the importance of national unity and self-reliance while addressing contemporary challenges. He called for caution against internal and external threats and emphasized the importance of sustainable development amid natural calamities. He expressed concern over the growing turmoil in neighboring countries and warned that similar forces are active in India, emphasizing the need for democratic means to bring about transformation.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the centenary celebrations of the RSS as the Chief Guest at Dr. Ambedkar International Centre in New Delhi. He lauded the RSS for its focus on nation-building and its efforts to awaken self-awareness and self-confidence among various sections of society. He also praised the organization's work in remote and inaccessible parts of the country, particularly among tribal communities.

To commemorate the RSS's centenary, the Government of India has released a special postage stamp and a commemorative coin. The ₹100 coin features the national emblem on one side and an image of 'Bharat Mata' in 'Varad Mudra' on the other.

Throughout its history, the RSS has faced periods of opposition and has been banned at least three times in independent India. Despite these challenges, the organization has grown significantly and has played a notable role in shaping the country's social and political landscape. The RSS is considered the ideological fountainhead of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

As the RSS embarks on its next century, it aims to contribute to building a developed India by 2047. The organization has resolved to promote a society free of discrimination, division, and discord, reinforcing harmony and inclusivity.
