In a statement posted on X, PM Modi stated, "We welcome President Trump's leadership as peace efforts in Gaza make decisive progress". He further noted that "Indications of the release of hostages mark a significant step forward". Modi also reaffirmed India's commitment to the cause, asserting that "India will continue to strongly support all efforts towards a durable and just peace".
These comments follow reports that Hamas has agreed to release Israeli hostages, a move that has been partially attributed to President Trump's 20-point Gaza resolution plan. Trump has also urged Israel to halt its bombing of Gaza to ensure the safe and swift release of the hostages.
India has consistently advocated for a peaceful resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. In September 2025, India voted in favor of a UN General Assembly resolution backing the 'New York Declaration,' which calls for a two-state solution. The resolution urges collective action to end the war in Gaza and emphasizes the need for a lasting settlement based on the two-state solution. India has also consistently condemned the October 7 attacks, calling them acts of terror, and has emphasized the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages. Despite this support, some political figures in India have criticized PM Modi's approach, particularly his perceived silence on the Gaza war and his welcoming of Trump's plan. Nevertheless, the Indian government's official stance remains firm in its support of a peaceful resolution and its recognition of the need for a two-state solution.
