Shimla, October 4, 2025 – The Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert for Himachal Pradesh, forecasting hail and very heavy rainfall on October 6. This follows the withdrawal of the southwest monsoon at the end of September, signaling a fresh wet spell for the region.
The alert covers several districts, with the most intense weather activity expected on Monday. Chamba, Kangra, Kullu, Mandi, and Sirmaur districts are under the orange alert, anticipating heavy to very heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms. The region of Lahaul and Spiti can expect snowfall in isolated areas. These conditions also bring the risk of lightning and gusty winds reaching speeds of 40 to 50 kilometers per hour.
A yellow alert has been issued for the remaining districts for October 6, indicating the likelihood of heavy rainfall and thunderstorms. There is also a possibility of hailstorms in some isolated areas. The Meteorological Department anticipates increased precipitation across Himachal Pradesh until October 7, with the peak of this activity occurring on October 6.
Una, Chamba, Kangra, and Mandi were issued an orange alert for heavy rainfall on October 5. A yellow alert for heavy rain was issued to Kullu, and a yellow alert for heavy rain or snowfall was issued to Lahaul-Spiti on the same day.
The weather pattern is attributed to an active western disturbance and high moisture levels from the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal. These conditions are expected to cause enhanced rainfall.
Residents can anticipate light to moderate rainfall in most areas between October 5 and 7. Certain locations may experience heavy rain or snowfall, with very heavy rain or snowfall possible in isolated areas on October 6. The approaching weather system is expected to bring thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds, with speeds of 40-50 kmph, to isolated locations throughout the state. Hailstorms may also occur in the plains and adjoining mid-hill regions. Higher altitude areas may experience rain or snowfall between October 5 and 8.
The anticipated weather conditions are expected to cause a drop in both minimum and maximum temperatures. Minimum temperatures could fall by 4–6 degrees Celsius, while maximum temperatures may decrease by 5–9 degrees Celsius in the days following Sunday.
The Meteorological Department advises residents and tourists to stay informed about weather updates and take necessary precautions.
