Arunachal Pradesh is significantly boosting tourism in 150 border villages within the Tawang district through the Vibrant Village Programme. This initiative focuses on developing infrastructure and enhancing connectivity to attract more tourists while carefully balancing development with the region's sensitive ecology.
Tawang, situated at an altitude of approximately 10,000 feet, is a mountainous region in the northwestern part of Arunachal Pradesh. It is home to the 400-year-old Tawang Monastery, one of the oldest and largest monasteries in India, and a vital center for Tibetan Buddhists. Tawang shares borders with Tibet to the north and Bhutan to the southwest. The name Tawang is believed to have originated from the Tawang Monastery, with "Ta" meaning horse and "Wang" meaning chosen.
Significant infrastructure upgrades are underway to improve connectivity and facilities for tourists. These include the construction of a new convention center and the Sela Tunnel. The Sela Tunnel is expected to improve all-weather connectivity to Tawang. These developments aim to attract increasing numbers of tourists to areas such as Mago and Chuna.
To enter Arunachal Pradesh, visitors need an Inner Line Permit (ILP), which can be obtained for a period of 15 days. Applicants need to provide a PRC (Permanent Residence Certificate), Election Card, Indian passport, PAN card, Income Tax Registration card, or Driving License and the application should be recommended by a relevant officer.
The Chief Secretary of Arunachal Pradesh, Manish Kumar Gupta, recently visited Zemithang, a vital area near the Indo-China border in the Tawang district, to assess development initiatives and explore opportunities for growth. The visit included inspections of sites like Sangetsar Lake, Khendzemane, and the Gorsam Stupa, emphasizing the region's cultural and spiritual heritage. Gupta highlighted the potential for spiritual, cultural, historical, and adventure tourism to boost the local economy.
The administration is also focused on sustainable practices. Gupta inspected the Material Recovery Facility managed by the Jemeithang Waste Management Committee and assured continued support for environmental initiatives.
