In response to escalating tensions with Pakistan and following the recent attack in Pahalgam, India has heightened security measures at airports across the country. The Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) has ordered a 100% pre-boarding check for all passengers, including a mandatory Secondary Ladder Point Check (SLPC) at all airports. This measure, along with a ban on visitor entry to terminal buildings, is designed to elevate aviation security to the highest level with immediate effect. These enhanced security protocols are being implemented under what some sources are calling "Operation Sindoor".
The increased security measures have led to significant disruptions and increased processing times at airports. Air India has advised passengers to arrive at least three hours prior to their scheduled departure to ensure smooth check-in and boarding, as check-in counters will now close 75 minutes before departure. IndiGo has also issued a similar advisory, requesting passengers to allow extra time for security checks and formalities.
These directives come in the wake of heightened tensions and follows "Operation Sindoor," India's response to the terror attack in Jammu & Kashmir's Anantnag that claimed 26 lives on April 22. The operation involved strikes on terror camps across the border in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. Following these strikes, Pakistan launched missile and drone attacks toward strategic Indian targets, including the Jammu airstrip. Indian forces have reportedly intercepted multiple drones and missiles.
In addition to the enhanced passenger checks, the BCAS has ordered airport operators to ensure all CCTV cameras are in working condition. Air marshal deployment will be aligned accordingly, and there will be intensive checking of vehicles and persons at the approach to airport terminals and parking areas. Authorities will also conduct proper checking of IDs of passengers and staff before entering the airport premises, along with random checking of passenger baggage.
The enhanced security steps also include increased surveillance and strict on-ground monitoring of microlite aircraft, aero models, para gliders, unmanned aerial systems (UAS), and drones. There will be deployment of additional security guards at aircraft and thorough scrutiny of Passenger Name Record (PNR), passenger, and cargo manifest. The government has also ordered strict monitoring of non-scheduled flight operations, including air ambulances, and enhanced security measures and surveillance at cargo and general aviation terminals.
Due to the ongoing situation, a number of airports in northern and western India have experienced temporary shutdowns, leading to flight cancellations and disruptions. Airlines have suspended flight operations from several airports, and passengers are advised to check with their airlines for the latest updates.
