Pakistan Shelling Escalates Along LoC, Targeting J&K Civilians; Rajouri Officer Dies Amidst Intensified Cross-Border Fire.

Tensions between India and Pakistan have escalated dramatically along the Line of Control (LoC) in recent days, with intensified shelling resulting in casualties and displacement of civilians. The recent surge in hostilities follows India's launch of "Operation Sindoor" on May 7, 2025, a series of missile strikes targeting alleged terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir, in response to the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam that killed 26 civilians.

The situation on the ground is grim, with Pakistani forces reportedly targeting civilian areas in Jammu and Kashmir (J&K). This has resulted in significant loss of life, including a senior government official. Raj Kumar Thapa, Additional District Development Commissioner of Rajouri, was killed when his residence was struck by an artillery shell during the heavy shelling by Pakistan. Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah expressed his condolences, remembering Thapa as a dedicated officer. "Just yesterday he was accompanying the Deputy CM around the district & attended the online meeting I chaired. Today the residence of the officer was hit by Pak shelling as they targeted Rajouri town," he wrote.

Besides the death of the senior officer, several other civilians have also lost their lives in the relentless shelling. In Poonch, one person was killed, and three others were injured in the Loran and Mendhar sectors. A woman was killed in the Uri sector of Kashmir, and another man lost his life in the Poonch district of Jammu. These casualties highlight the devastating impact of the cross-border firing on innocent civilians.

The intense shelling has forced many residents to flee their homes and seek refuge in safer locations. Authorities are evacuating people from vulnerable areas along the LoC to camps and government accommodations. The displacement adds to the already existing challenges of the affected population, disrupting essential services and daily life. There is widespread panic and concern, with schools and colleges closed, and hospitals operating under a state of emergency.

India has retaliated strongly to the ceasefire violations and drone attacks by Pakistan. The Indian Army said it is giving a "befitting reply" to the ceasefire violations. Amid the escalating tensions, there are reports of explosions heard in various locations, including Srinagar, Jammu, Pathankot and other border areas. Blackouts have also been enforced in some cities.

The international community has expressed deep concern over the escalating tensions between India and Pakistan. UN Secretary-General António Guterres has underscored the need to avoid a confrontation that could result in tragic consequences. The ongoing conflict has raised fears of a wider conflict between the two nuclear-armed neighbors, with potentially catastrophic consequences.
