White's basketball journey began at Seeger High School, where she set records and was named Indiana Miss Basketball in 1995. She continued her success at Purdue University, leading the Boilermakers to the NCAA Championship in 1999 and earning National Player of the Year honors. White was also inducted into the Purdue Athletics Hall of Fame in 2006.

White's professional career included five years in the WNBA, playing for the Charlotte Sting and the Indiana Fever. After retiring in 2004, she transitioned to coaching, with assistant positions at Ball State, Kansas State, and the University of Toledo. She then joined the Chicago Sky as an assistant coach in 2007.

In 2014, White became the head coach of the Indiana Fever, leading them to the WNBA Finals in her first season. She later coached the Vanderbilt Commodores from 2016 to 2021. White returned to the WNBA in 2023 as head coach of the Connecticut Sun, earning WNBA Coach of the Year. In November 2024, she was re-hired by the Indiana Fever.

White was previously married to Brent McCarty, a football player, but they divorced in 2002. She is currently in a relationship with Lisa Salters, an ESPN reporter. White has three sons, Landon, and twins, Aiden and Avery.
