On the 34th death anniversary of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, tributes poured in from across the political spectrum, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Congress leaders alike honoring his memory. Rajiv Gandhi, who served as India's Prime Minister from 1984 to 1989, was assassinated on May 21, 1991, in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu.

Prime Minister Modi paid his respects via a post on X, acknowledging Rajiv Gandhi's role as a significant figure in Indian politics.

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge led the Congress party in paying heartfelt tributes at Veer Bhumi in New Delhi. Kharge described Rajiv Gandhi as a "great son of India" who inspired hope in millions. He highlighted Gandhi's visionary leadership and courageous interventions, stating they were instrumental in preparing India for the challenges and opportunities of the 21st century. Kharge specifically mentioned key contributions such as lowering the voting age to 18, strengthening Panchayati Raj, spearheading the Telecom and IT revolution, implementing computerization programs, securing sustained peace accords, launching a universal immunization program, and introducing a new education policy focused on inclusive learning.

Rahul Gandhi, Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha and Rajiv Gandhi's son, also paid an emotional tribute at Veer Bhumi. The Congress party shared a message on X, emphasizing that the excellent work done by Rajiv Gandhi in the national interest would never be forgotten.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma also paid homage to the former Prime Minister on X.

Rajiv Gandhi assumed leadership of the Congress party in 1984 after the assassination of his mother, then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. He became India's youngest Prime Minister at the age of 40. His tenure was marked by efforts to modernize India, particularly in the fields of technology and communication. He served as Prime Minister until December 2, 1989, and later as the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha until his assassination.

His legacy continues to be remembered, with leaders acknowledging his contributions to shaping modern India and his efforts to propel the nation into the 21st century.
