The future of Hera Pheri 3 is looking increasingly uncertain, with a series of unexpected events shaking the very foundation of the beloved comedy franchise. Director Priyadarshan has revealed the extent of the turmoil, indicating that Akshay Kumar was deeply affected, even to the point of tears, following Paresh Rawal's sudden decision to exit the film.
Priyadarshan, who directed the original Hera Pheri and is helming the third installment, expressed his shock and confusion over Rawal's departure. He stated that Rawal did not communicate his decision to him or Akshay Kumar before making it public. According to Priyadarshan, Akshay had personally asked him to confirm with both Rawal and Suniel Shetty that they were on board with the project, and both had agreed at the time.
"I don't know why this happened because Paresh didn't inform us," Priyadarshan said in an interview with Hindustan Times. "Before starting the film, Akshay asked me to check with both Paresh and Suniel and I did and both were onboard." The director, who has worked with both Akshay and Paresh in several films, including the upcoming horror-comedy Bhoot Bangla, seemed genuinely perplexed by Rawal's actions.
Adding fuel to the fire, reports have emerged that Akshay Kumar, who is also producing Hera Pheri 3 under his banner Cape of Good Films, has sent a legal notice to Paresh Rawal, seeking ₹25 crore in damages for breach of contract and allegedly sabotaging the film. Priyadarshan has supported Akshay's decision to take legal action, stating that Akshay has invested a significant amount of money in the film, having bought the rights from producer Feroz Nadiadwala. "I don't have anything to lose, but Akshay has invested money, and that could be the reason why he is taking this action," Priyadarshan explained. "Paresh Rawal hasn't spoken to me till date."
Adding to the sense of disbelief, Suniel Shetty revealed that he learned about Rawal's exit from his children, who sent him the news during an interview. Shetty emphasized that Hera Pheri 3 cannot happen without Paresh Rawal, stating that the character of Baburao Ganpatrao Apte is integral to the film's success.
Paresh Rawal, on the other hand, has attempted to clarify his reasons for leaving the project. He dismissed rumors of creative differences with Priyadarshan, stating on X (formerly Twitter), "I wish to put it on record that my decision to step away from Hera Pheri 3 was not due to creative differences. I reiterate that there are no creative disagreement with the film maker. I hold immense love, respect, and faith in Mr. Priyadarshan the film director."
However, Rawal has also expressed a sense of dissatisfaction with the project, suggesting that he doesn't feel the same excitement about it anymore. He told Mid-Day, "I know it came as a shock to many. We three make a great combination with Priyadarshanji directing us, but the fact is that I opted out because today I don't feel like a part of it. It is final for the time being. I always say never say never for anything. One cannot predict what happens in the future.”
The conflicting statements and legal battle have cast a dark cloud over Hera Pheri 3, leaving fans and industry insiders wondering if the film will ever see the light of day with its original cast.
