At the audio launch of the upcoming film "Thug Life," actor Simbu expressed his heartfelt gratitude to director Mani Ratnam, recounting a period in his career when he felt isolated and ostracized by the Tamil film industry. Simbu revealed that Mani Ratnam extended a hand of support and offered him work at a time when many producers were hesitant to collaborate with him.

Simbu shared an emotional anecdote, recalling his childhood admiration for Mani Ratnam's work. He mentioned watching Ratnam's film "Anjali" and feeling a pang of sadness for not being a part of it as a child actor. As he grew older, Simbu primarily starred in mass masala films. He stated that there was even talk of producers potentially issuing him a "red card," a temporary ban preventing him from accepting new projects.

During this challenging period, Simbu received an unexpected call from Mani Ratnam's Madras Talkies production company. Initially disbelieving, he met with Mani Ratnam and confirmed the offer. Simbu expressed profound gratitude to the director for taking a chance on him when others were wary of working with him due to controversies and professional uncertainties. He emphasized that he would never forget Mani Ratnam's act of faith and support. Notably, in 2023, Simbu, along with other actors, reportedly faced "red card" situations from the Tamil Film Producers' Council.

Simbu also spoke about how Mani Ratnam had approached him for roles in "Ponniyin Selvan" and initially for "Thug Life" as well. He expressed his excitement about the current opportunity to work with Mani Ratnam, especially alongside the legendary Kamal Haasan.

"Thug Life" marks Mani Ratnam's reunion with Kamal Haasan after 38 years, since their iconic film "Nayakan" (1987). Described as an "emotional drama within a world of crime," the film boasts a stellar cast including Kamal Haasan, Simbu, Trisha Krishnan, Joju George, Abhirami, Ashok Selvan, and Nasser. With music by A.R. Rahman, "Thug Life" is slated for a theatrical release on June 5, 2025, and will also be available on Netflix after its theatrical run.

Simbu's emotional speech at the audio launch highlighted the importance of support and mentorship in the film industry. His story resonated with fans and colleagues alike, underscoring the impact of Mani Ratnam's belief in his talent during a particularly vulnerable time in his career.
