The tragic stampede in Bengaluru during the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) victory celebrations has ignited a political storm, with the Karnataka BJP holding the Congress-led state government accountable for the incident. The incident, which occurred on Wednesday, June 4, 2025, outside M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, resulted in at least 11 deaths and numerous injuries.
Karnataka BJP chief B.Y. Vijayendra has led the charge, demanding that Chief Minister Siddaramaiah fix responsibility for the "administrative failure." Vijayendra, who visited the injured in the hospital, asserted that the state government should not have organized the event without proper planning and adequate police deployment. He pointed to the senior police officials' advice against holding the function near Vidhana Soudha, alleging that the government disregarded these warnings, prioritizing publicity over safety.
The BJP's criticism extends beyond Vijayendra. Tejasvi Surya, the Bengaluru South MP, condemned the government's lack of strict measures to prevent overcrowding. The party's IT Cell chief, Amit Malviya, expressed shock and anger, stating that the incident could have been avoided with basic administrative foresight and proper crowd control. Other BJP leaders, like CT Ravi, have gone so far as to call the incident "state-sponsored murder," accusing the government of being directly responsible for the deaths.
The BJP has also criticized the Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar for allegedly being preoccupied with photo opportunities while neglecting safety measures. They accuse the government of "criminal negligence" and claim that "blood is on the hands of [the] Congress govt." The party has also demanded a judicial inquiry into the stampede, seeking a thorough investigation into the lapses that led to the tragedy.
In response to the tragedy, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has announced a compensation of ₹10 lakh for the families of the deceased. He stated that over two lakh people gathered at the stadium, which has a capacity of only 35,000, indicating the scale of the overcrowding issue. Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar has expressed condolences and appealed for calm, acknowledging the uncontrollable nature of the crowd.
The opposition's criticism also includes allegations of inadequate arrangements at the stadium. Vijayendra claimed that there was no police presence inside the stadium and no ambulance facilities available, forcing injured individuals to arrange their own transport to hospitals. These claims further fuel the BJP's narrative of governmental negligence and mismanagement.
The stampede has also drawn condemnation from other political parties, including Janata Dal (Secular), with leaders accusing the administration of gross negligence and a lack of public safety measures.
