The honeymoon trip to Meghalaya for Raja Raghuvanshi and his new wife, Sonam, turned into a nightmare when Raja was found murdered. In a shocking turn of events, Sonam has been arrested as the prime suspect in her husband's murder. According to reports, Sonam allegedly orchestrated the killing with her boyfriend, Raj Kushwaha, and hired contract killers to carry out the crime.
Raja and Sonam Raghuvanshi got married on May 11, 2025, and embarked on their honeymoon to Meghalaya on May 20. Just days into their trip, on May 23, they went missing. Meghalaya Police initiated a search, and on May 24, the couple's rented scooter was discovered abandoned near a cafe on the road from Shillong to Sohra. The search intensified, and on June 2, Raja's body was found in a deep gorge near the Wei Sawdong Falls parking lot in Sohra, East Khasi Hills. The post-mortem examination revealed that Raja had suffered fatal injuries to the head, caused by a sharp object.
As the investigation progressed, suspicion fell on Sonam. Police investigations revealed that Sonam was allegedly having an affair with Raj Kushwaha, who helped her plan Raja's murder. According to authorities, Sonam hired three men – Akash Rajput, Vishal Singh Chauhan, and Anand Kurmi – to execute the crime. The accused arrived in Shillong on May 22, a day before Raja Raghuvanshi was murdered.
According to senior Shillong Police official Vivek Syiem, Sonam instructed the hired killers to "hit him (Raja)." She was present during the murder, the accused revealed during the probe.
After the murder, Sonam allegedly traveled from Shillong to Indore via Siliguri by train on May 25. In Indore, she met with Raj and stayed in a rented accommodation before being dropped off in Uttar Pradesh. She surrendered to the police in Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh, on Monday.
Meghalaya Police launched "Operation Honeymoon" on June 7 to investigate the case. CCTV footage revealed that Sonam had spoken to the three hitmen approximately 10 kilometers from the crime scene.
Police sources indicate that Sonam allegedly wanted to stage Raja's murder as a robbery gone wrong and planned to live as a widow for some time before convincing her family to allow her to marry Raj Kushwaha.
The Special Investigation Team (SIT) grew suspicious of Sonam after learning that she had lied about fasting for her husband's health. The hotel owner where the couple stayed revealed that she had consumed food, contradicting her claim. This led the police to put Sonam under technical surveillance, which revealed her constant communication with Raj Kushwaha.
All five accused, including Sonam Raghuvanshi, Raj Kushwaha, Akash Rajput, Vishal Singh Chauhan, and Anand Kurmi, are currently in custody. Police are taking all the accused to Meghalaya for further investigation.
