The disappearance of a 28-year-old man from Agartala, Tripura, has been solved with the gruesome discovery of his body inside an ice-cream freezer, leading to the arrest of six individuals, including a doctor. The incident, which has sent shockwaves through the region, appears to be the result of a complex love triangle.
Shariful Islam, an electrician involved in the Agartala Smart City project, was reported missing on June 8, 2025. Following an intensive investigation, police traced his body to a commercial ice-cream freezer located at a shop in Gandacherra, Dhalai district, approximately 120 km from Agartala. The shop is owned by the father of the primary suspect, Dr. Dibakar Saha, 28.
According to West Tripura Superintendent of Police (SP) Kiran Kumar, the motive behind the murder is a love triangle. Shariful Islam was allegedly involved with a woman who was also the cousin of Dr. Dibakar Saha. Police investigations revealed that Dr. Saha was also in love with the same woman, creating a situation of intense romantic rivalry. SP Kumar stated that love messages exchanged between Shariful and the woman were found on their mobile phones. It appears Shariful had recently ended a relationship with the woman, while Dr. Saha had just begun one, leading the latter to see Shariful as a potential obstacle.
The police investigation indicates that Dr. Saha orchestrated a plan to eliminate Shariful. On June 8, Shariful was lured to a house in South Indranagar under the pretense of receiving a gift. Upon arrival, Dr. Saha, along with accomplices Animesh Yadav, 21, and Nabanita Das, 25, allegedly ambushed and strangled Shariful to death. The perpetrators then packed the body into a large trolley bag that had been purchased a couple of days earlier.
The following morning, Dr. Saha's parents, Dipak Saha, 52, and Debika Saha, 40, traveled from Gandacherra to Agartala and transported the trolley bag containing Shariful's body back to their shop. The body was then concealed inside the ice-cream freezer in an attempt to hide the crime.
The breakthrough in the case came after days of intensive investigation by the police. They arrested six individuals in connection with the murder: Dr. Dibakar Saha, his parents Dipak and Debika Saha, Nabanita Das, Joydeep Das, 20, and Animesh Yadav. All those arrested are to be produced before the court.
The discovery of the body and the subsequent arrests have created a stir in Tripura, especially following another recent murder case in neighboring Meghalaya. Authorities have recovered digital evidence, including mobile messages, which corroborate the love triangle as the primary motive for the crime. The investigation is ongoing, and police are gathering further evidence to build a strong case against the accused.
