The investigation into the murder of Kalpita Sharma, the 24-year-old daughter of a Hathras District Magistrate's driver, has led to the arrest of an accused following a police encounter. The incident occurred on Saturday, June 14, 2025, when Kalpita and her mother were returning home from shopping in the Sadar tehsil area of Hathras, Uttar Pradesh. Two bike-borne assailants allegedly opened fire on Kalpita, resulting in her death at the scene.

Following the incident, police launched a search operation to apprehend the suspects. According to latest reports, Naveen, who has been identified as the primary accused in the case, was arrested after an encounter with the police. During the encounter, Naveen sustained injuries and is currently receiving medical treatment at a hospital. Authorities have recovered a country-made pistol from his possession.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the murder was motivated by personal enmity stemming from an ongoing family dispute. Kalpita's mother has alleged that her daughter-in-law's lover was involved in the attack. She claimed that the daughter-in-law, Jyoti Sharma, and her lover, Gulshan, held a grudge against the family. There has been a long-standing dispute in the family, and Jyoti had filed for divorce from Kalpita’s brother, Vishal, with the case pending for nearly a year. The mother also alleged that Jyoti's lover had stolen a revolver from their house two days before the incident.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Chiranjeev Nath Sinha confirmed that the victim's mother is an eyewitness to the crime and that her statement has been recorded. The police have registered a case and are continuing their efforts to trace all individuals involved in the murder. Initial findings indicate that a friend of Kalpita's sister-in-law may have been the one who carried out the shooting.

The incident took place near the SDM residence, an area with a high presence of administrative and police officials, raising questions about security and police vigilance.
