A couple from Gwalior has been apprehended by the authorities for allegedly supplying drugs to local youth. The arrest was made following a raid where law enforcement officials seized 7 kilograms of ganja (cannabis).
The couple, whose identities have not yet been released to the public, are now facing charges under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. This act prohibits, among other things, the production, manufacture, possession, sale, purchase, transportation, and use of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances.
According to police reports, the couple had been under surveillance for some time after authorities received multiple complaints about their alleged involvement in drug peddling. Acting on a tip-off, a team of officers raided their residence and discovered the large quantity of ganja. The seized contraband has an estimated street value of several thousand rupees.
During the initial interrogation, the couple reportedly confessed to their involvement in supplying drugs to local youth in Gwalior. They revealed that they had been operating for several months, sourcing the ganja from other states and selling it to their network of customers, primarily consisting of students and young adults. The police are currently investigating the couple's supply chain to identify and apprehend other individuals involved in the drug trafficking operation.
This arrest highlights the growing concern over drug abuse among the youth in Madhya Pradesh, and Gwalior in particular. Authorities have been intensifying their efforts to crack down on drug peddlers and suppliers in the region. Several initiatives have been launched to raise awareness about the dangers of drug abuse and provide rehabilitation support to addicts.
In a similar incident, in October 2024, following the murder of a youth, authorities launched a crackdown on illegal drugs. Four departments—the police, narcotics, excise, and social justice—joined forces to combat the drug trade.
The Central Bureau of Narcotics (CBN) which has units in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh is also actively involved in efforts against drug menace. In August 2023, the CBN destroyed approximately 37.75 tons of Narcotic Drugs seized in 5 cases.
This recent arrest of the Gwalior couple serves as a stern warning to those involved in drug trafficking and peddling activities. The police have reiterated their commitment to eradicating the drug menace from the city and ensuring a safe and healthy environment for the youth. Further investigations are underway, and more arrests are expected in connection with this case.
