In light of the escalating tensions between Israel and Iran, the Indian government has initiated the evacuation of Indian citizens from Israel who wish to return home. This operation, an extension of "Operation Sindhu," which was initially launched to evacuate Indian nationals from Iran, will facilitate the return of Indian citizens via land borders, followed by air travel to India.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) announced the decision, stating that the Indian Embassy in Tel Aviv is coordinating the evacuation process. Indian nationals in Israel who wish to leave have been urged to register with the embassy at https://www.indembassyisrael.gov.in/indian_national_reg">https://www.indembassyisrael.gov.in/indian_national_reg if they have not already done so. For any queries or assistance, a 24/7 control room has been established at the embassy, with contact numbers +972 54-7520711 and +972 54-3278392, and email address cons1.telaviv@mea.gov.in.
This is the second major evacuation operation undertaken by India in Israel in recent years. In October 2023, "Operation Ajay" was launched to evacuate Indian citizens who wanted to leave Israel due to the conflict between Israel and Hamas.
The decision to commence "Operation Sindhu" for Indian nationals in Israel comes a day after the Israeli ambassador, Reuven Azar, confirmed that the Israeli government was coordinating with the Indian Embassy in Tel Aviv to assist Indians wishing to return home amidst the intensified air conflict between Israel and Iran.
The MEA has reiterated its commitment to the safety and security of Indian nationals abroad, stating that the government is closely monitoring the situation and the embassy remains in constant contact with the Indian community to provide all possible assistance. The embassy has also advised Indian citizens in Israel to remain vigilant and adhere strictly to the safety guidelines issued by Israeli authorities and the Home Front Command.
It is estimated that approximately 26,000 Indian citizens reside in Israel, working in various sectors such as industries, agriculture, and academic institutions. Meanwhile, around 10,000 Indian citizens are estimated to be residing in Iran. The current operation also takes into account the evacuation of 110 Indian students from Iran, who were transported to India via Armenia. Another group of Indians have been moved from Qom to Mashhad for evacuation through the Iran-Turkmenistan border. They are expected to be airlifted once they cross over to Turkmenistan.
The government's swift action underscores its commitment to the welfare of its citizens abroad during times of crisis. By facilitating their safe return home, India is ensuring the security and well-being of its diaspora in the face of escalating regional tensions.
