To mark the 11th International Day of Yoga, Indian Railways organized yoga sessions at some of its most iconic engineering marvels: the Chenab Bridge, the Anji Khad Bridge, and the Pamban Bridge. This initiative, held on June 21, 2025, showcased a fusion of India's rich cultural heritage and its engineering prowess.
For the first time ever, a yoga session was conducted on the Chenab Bridge, the world's highest railway arch bridge, located in Jammu and Kashmir. This event symbolized Indian Railways' confidence and engineering capabilities, drawing participation from civil officers, railway staff, CRPF personnel, local residents, and yoga enthusiasts. Participants performed various asanas against the backdrop of the Chenab valley, embracing the theme of "Yoga for One Earth, One Health."
The Chenab Bridge, inaugurated on June 9, 2025, by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, stands 359 meters above the Chenab River and is a 1.3-kilometer-long steel arch bridge designed to withstand seismic activity and high wind loads. It is a crucial component of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project, enhancing connectivity between Jammu and Srinagar and integrating the Kashmir Valley with the rest of India by rail.
Yoga sessions were also held on the Anji Khad Bridge, India's first cable-stayed rail bridge, and the Pamban Bridge in Tamil Nadu, India's first vertical-lift rail bridge. These events highlighted the blend of yoga and engineering excellence, with participants including railway officers, staff, Railway Protection Force personnel, scouts and guides, school students, public representatives, and the general public.
The Anji Khad Bridge, part of the USBRL project, spans 725 meters with a 290-meter main span and connects Katra and Reasi. The Pamban Bridge, vital for connecting mainland India to Rameswaram Island, features a vertical lift span for facilitating shipping traffic.
Aligned with the theme "Yoga for One Earth, One Health," the celebrations extended across all Railway zones, divisions, stations, and premises throughout India. Union Ministers of State for Railways, Shri V. Somanna and Shri Ravneet Singh, participated in yoga sessions held in Hassan, Karnataka, and Sukhna Lake, Chandigarh, respectively. Shri Satish Kumar, Chairman and CEO of the Railway Board, also took part in a yoga session at Karnail Singh Stadium, New Delhi.
In addition to the bridge events, a special EMU train dedicated to yoga was operated by the Howrah Division in West Bengal. The train featured illustrations of various Yoga Mudras along with their health benefits, promoting the practice of yoga among commuters.
The yoga sessions included asanas, pranayama, meditation, and awareness activities, emphasizing the holistic benefits of yoga. This initiative by Indian Railways not only promoted health and wellness but also showcased the nation's engineering achievements and cultural heritage on a global platform.
