Diljit Dosanjh is facing significant backlash and online trolling for his upcoming Punjabi film, "Sardaar Ji 3," which features Pakistani actress Hania Aamir in a prominent role. The controversy has ignited debates surrounding cultural collaborations between India and Pakistan, particularly in light of heightened tensions and recent terror attacks.
The Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) has strongly objected to the film's casting choices, urging the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) to deny certification to "Sardaar Ji 3." The FWICE has reiterated its stance against working with Pakistani artists, especially after the Pahalgam attack in April, which resulted in the deaths of 26 Indian tourists. The organization has even threatened to take action against artists who continue to collaborate with Pakistani talent, potentially labeling them as "traitors."
Speculation about Hania Aamir's involvement in "Sardaar Ji 3" arose earlier this year when behind-the-scenes photos circulated online. While Dosanjh attempted to downplay the rumors, the recent release of the film's trailer confirmed Aamir's role as the female lead. The trailer's release has further fueled the controversy, with many social media users expressing outrage and calling for a boycott of Dosanjh's projects. Some have accused him of being "shameless" and "insensitive" to national sentiment.
Adding to the film's woes, the "Sardaar Ji 3" trailer has been geo-blocked in India, although teasers and songs are still accessible, while Hania Aamir's Instagram account has also reportedly been blocked in India. The film is slated for an overseas-only release on June 27, a decision seemingly made to avoid potential regulatory and public backlash in India.
Despite the criticism, some fans have defended Dosanjh, arguing that art should transcend political boundaries. However, the prevailing sentiment online appears to be one of disapproval, with many questioning Dosanjh's commitment to India. This isn't the first time the FWICE has intervened; they previously enforced a ban on "Abir Gulaal," a Hindi film featuring Pakistani actor Fawad Khan.
