Ridhi Dogra has recently opened up about her experience playing Kaveri Amma, Shah Rukh Khan's godmother, in the blockbuster film Jawan. While the role garnered her widespread recognition, the actress confessed that it was "painful" for the fan in her to portray a maternal figure to the superstar.
In a recent interview on SCREEN's Dear Me Season 2, Dogra revealed her initial reservations about accepting the role. She humorously recounted her reaction upon learning she would be playing SRK's godmother, stating, "SRK is eternally young, and I am like a mother to him; that's ridiculous, that's the stuff nightmares are made of." Despite her inner turmoil as a Shah Rukh Khan fan, the opportunity to work with director Atlee and be a part of such a massive project was too tempting to pass up.
Dogra explained that her anxiety levels were high throughout the Jawan shoot. She was initially hesitant, questioning Atlee's choice to cast her in the role. The actress also shared an interesting insight into the casting dynamics, suggesting that Deepika Padukone was initially considered for the mother figure role. "[T]hey just didn't want to call Deepika the mother, so I became Kaveri Amma, but Deepika was the mother. I was the guardian. For me, it was like, what the hell," she said.
Despite her personal feelings about playing a mother figure to Shah Rukh Khan, Dogra acknowledged the positive aspects of the experience. She spoke highly of Deepika Padukone, noting her empathy and the positive environment she created on set. Dogra admitted to taking inspiration from Padukone's demeanor, noting her gratitude and presence.
The actress further elaborated on the challenges of portraying an older character while sharing screen space with Shah Rukh Khan. She jokingly said that while any actress would want to look her best in front of SRK, she was dressed as an old woman. However, she also emphasized the valuable learning experience it was to observe Khan's work ethic and collaborative spirit.
Dogra also addressed the audience's initial reaction to her casting, with some expressing surprise at seeing a relatively young and "hot" actress playing a mother figure. However, she is celebrating the fact that she can do everything. Ridhi stated that she is not sinking with the thought that, 'Oh! I played an older character on screen'.
Despite the initial shock and her personal reservations, Ridhi Dogra acknowledges that Jawan has significantly increased her visibility and opened doors to new opportunities. She appreciates that audiences remember her character fondly. Dogra also mentioned that she needs another film with Shah Rukh Khan as a redemption for Jawan.
