Chinese President Xi Jinping has called upon Tibetan residents living near the India-China border to contribute to the region's prosperity and stability. In a message to residents of Nyingchi, a prefecture-level area close to the Arunachal Pradesh border, Xi expressed his hopes that they would actively participate in protecting the natural beauty of the plateau, developing the region's tourism industry, and building a prosperous border area under the guidance of the Communist Party.
Xi Jinping conveyed his satisfaction upon learning about the positive changes and increased incomes in the village in recent years. He encouraged the residents to set down roots in the border area, safeguard Chinese territory, and develop their hometowns. He also expressed his hope that the family would motivate more herders to become guardians of Chinese territory and builders of a happy hometown.
China claims Arunachal Pradesh as part of South Tibet, a claim firmly rejected by India. This border dispute has been a long-standing issue between the two countries, with India asserting that the Sino-Indian border dispute covers the 4,057-km Line of Actual Control, while China claims it is confined to about 2,000 kms to the area of Arunachal Pradesh.
Xi's message emphasizes the importance of ethnic unity and the need for all ethnic groups to enhance their recognition of the Chinese nation, culture, and the Communist Party. He has called for the promotion of Mandarin and nationally unified textbooks in border regions to foster a sense of national identity. He also stressed the need to guide Tibetan Buddhism to adapt to socialist society and develop in the Chinese context.
In recent years, China has been constructing villages along the Tibetan border areas, a move perceived as aimed at ensuring border security and promoting development. These efforts are part of a broader strategy to strengthen border governance and maintain stability in the region. Xi has also called for increased security and wider use of Mandarin in these border areas.
Xi Jinping's focus on Tibet's border security is not new. In 2020, he emphasized that safeguarding border security should be a priority and called for solidifying border defenses and ensuring frontier security. He also stressed the importance of educating the public to fight against separatism and strengthen the unity of all ethnic groups in Tibet.
During a visit to Tibet in 2021, Xi Jinping emphasized the four major issues of stability, development, ecology, and border-area consolidation. He called for new achievements in protecting the ecology of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and advancing its sustainable development. He also stressed the need to strengthen exchanges and interactions among ethnic groups and build a stronger sense of identification with the country.
