Neeraj Chopra, the Olympic champion and world-renowned javelin thrower, has revealed which Indian cricketer's superpower he desires most. While many might expect him to choose a modern-day icon like Virat Kohli or MS Dhoni, Chopra has set his sights on a different legend: Sachin Tendulkar.
Speaking to Robin Uthappa on Star Sports, Chopra explained his choice. He admires Tendulkar's ability to consistently perform at the highest level while facing immense pressure and challenges from world-class bowlers. Chopra stated that he would want that superpower to help him handle challenges with a calm mindset and perform at his best. He believes that Tendulkar has represented India exceptionally well for many years and has set numerous records.
Chopra, who recently reclaimed the world No. 1 spot in the World Rankings, is preparing to compete at the inaugural NC Classic on July 5th. The event, a World Athletics 'A' category javelin throw competition, will be held at Bengaluru's Sree Kanteerava Stadium. This is the first event of its kind to be held in India.
The javelin star also expressed his admiration for former Australian fast bowler Brett Lee and India's Jasprit Bumrah. Chopra noted that he had heard that Lee was a javelin thrower in the past and believes he could have excelled in the sport during his peak years. He also mentioned his desire to try javelin with Bumrah and learn some bowling skills from him.
Interestingly, Chopra drew a parallel between cricket and javelin, observing that MS Dhoni's famous 'Helicopter Shot' shares similarities with a javelin throw in terms of body swing, power, and technique.
Chopra also shared insights into his mindset before competitions. He avoids rituals and focuses on maintaining composure. His approach involves staying calm, avoiding overthinking, concentrating on giving his best, eating well, and getting adequate rest. He also shared that the most valuable advice he has received came from his coach, Jan Železný, a legendary javelin thrower and the world record holder.
Prior to the NC Classic, Chopra has been in impressive form, even breaching the 90m mark this season. He recently secured victories at the Paris Diamond League and the Ostrava Golden Spike event.
