The alleged gangrape of a 24-year-old law student in Kolkata has triggered a massive political storm in West Bengal, with the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) facing severe criticism from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over the incident and the responses from some of its leaders. The incident occurred on June 25, 2025, inside the South Calcutta Law College premises, located in the Kasba area of Kolkata.
Following the incident, the Kolkata Police arrested four individuals, including Monojit Mishra, an alumnus of the college and the prime accused; Promit Mukherjee and Zaid Ahmed, both senior students; and the college's security guard. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been formed to probe the case. Police investigations suggest the crime was premeditated, with the accused allegedly planning the assault for several days. It has also been revealed that the accused have a history of sexually harassing female students, and police are investigating whether they shared videos of the crime.
The BJP has launched a scathing attack on the TMC government, alleging that the accused have links to the ruling party and accusing the government of insensitivity and inaction. BJP leaders have demanded the resignation of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, accusing her government of failing to ensure the safety of women in the state. The BJP has also formed a fact-finding committee to investigate the matter.
Adding fuel to the fire, several TMC leaders have made controversial statements regarding the incident. One TMC leader appeared to blame the victim, suggesting that the incident wouldn't have happened if she hadn't gone to the college when it was closed. Another TMC MP questioned what could be done if a friend rapes another friend. These remarks have drawn strong condemnation from the opposition and sparked outrage among the public. TMC MP Mahua Moitra also criticized party leaders' comments on the Kolkata gangrape case.
In response to the uproar, the TMC has officially distanced itself from the controversial remarks made by its leaders, stating that they do not reflect the party's position and reaffirming its zero-tolerance policy towards crimes against women. However, this has not quelled the criticism, with the BJP accusing the TMC of attempting to shield the accused and trivializing the crime.
The Kolkata Police has warned of strict legal action against anyone attempting to disclose the identity of the victim, emphasizing the legal and ethical obligations to protect her privacy. The police are also examining CCTV footage that reportedly shows the victim being dragged inside the college premises by two of the accused.
The incident has led to widespread protests in Kolkata, with various political parties and organizations demanding justice for the victim and calling for stricter measures to ensure women's safety. The National Commission for Women has also taken cognizance of the matter and visited the college.
