Anurag Basu, the director of the upcoming film Metro… In Dino, has revealed that the idea for a sequel to his 2007 hit, Life in a… Metro, originated with the late Irrfan Khan. Basu shared that Khan's enthusiasm and encouragement were instrumental in setting the project in motion.
Basu recounted a casual meeting with Irrfan Khan where the actor suggested that Metro should have a sequel. At the time, Irrfan was filming Qarib Qarib Single, and Basu recalls that Irrfan felt his character in that film was an extension of his role in Life in a... Metro. Irrfan's suggestion, "Yaar banate hai," (Let's make it, friend) spurred Basu to start thinking about a sequel.
Initially, Basu even wrote a draft centered around Konkona Sen Sharma and Irrfan Khan's characters. While that specific story didn't materialize, it marked the beginning of the journey toward Metro… In Dino.
Metro… In Dino is described as a "spiritual sequel" to Life in a… Metro. This means that while it doesn't directly continue the original film's storyline, it explores similar themes of modern relationships, love, and life in the city. The film is structured as an anthology, featuring multiple stories of contemporary couples navigating the complexities of love and heartbreak in Mumbai.
The cast of Metro… In Dino includes Anupam Kher, Neena Gupta, Konkona Sen Sharma, Pankaj Tripathi, Aditya Roy Kapur, Sara Ali Khan, Ali Fazal, and Fatima Sana Shaikh. Konkona Sen Sharma is the only actor returning from the original film, although she plays a different character.
Basu has also mentioned that the film serves as a tribute to both Irrfan Khan and the late singer KK, who sang some of the most famous tracks from Life in a… Metro. Konkona Sen Sharma suggested including a tribute to Irrfan Khan's character in the story. In Metro In Dino, Konkona's character is called Kajal, and she is paired with Pankaj Tripathi, whose character is named Monty, which was also the name of Irrfan's character in Life in a Metro. Basu clarified that while the name is the same, the character is very different.
The music for Metro… In Dino is composed by Pritam, who also composed the music for Life in a… Metro. The return of Pritam has raised expectations, as the original film's soundtrack was highly successful and is considered iconic. Several songs from the film have already been released, including "Zamaana Lage," "Dil Ka Kya," "Mann Ye Mera," and "Aur Mohabbat Kitni Karoon".
Metro… In Dino is slated to release on July 4, 2025.
