An Air India flight from Delhi to Washington, D.C., was cancelled mid-journey after a maintenance issue was detected during a scheduled fuel stop in Vienna, Austria on July 2, 2025. The flight, AI103, was operating on schedule when it made the planned stop in Vienna.
During routine checks, an "extended maintenance task" was identified, requiring immediate attention. According to an Air India spokesperson, the repair needed more time, leading to the cancellation of the Vienna to Washington, D.C. leg of the journey and the disembarkation of all passengers in Vienna.
The cancellation of AI103 also impacted the return flight, AI104, from Washington, D.C. to Delhi via Vienna, which was also cancelled. Air India stated that affected passengers have been rebooked on alternative flights to Delhi or offered full refunds, depending on their preferences.
Passengers eligible for visa-free entry or those holding valid Schengen visas were provided with hotel accommodations in Vienna until their next available flight. Accommodations are being arranged for those without entry permission, pending immigration and security clearances by Austrian authorities.
Air India has expressed regret for the inconvenience caused and affirmed its commitment to prioritizing the safety of passengers and crew.
This disruption follows other recent incidents involving Air India flights. Recently, an Air India aircraft, operating as AI 357 from Tokyo to Delhi, was diverted to Kolkata on June 29 due to high cabin temperatures. The airline confirmed that the diversion was a precautionary measure, and the aircraft landed safely without incident.
