The UEFA Women's Euro 2025 is underway in Switzerland, with the tournament running from July 2 to July 27. The opening night saw a mix of drama and excitement, setting the stage for what promises to be a thrilling competition.

One of the pre-tournament favorites, Spain, is poised to enter the competition. Ranked as the highest European side in the world and second only to the United States Women's National Team (USWNT) in the FIFA World Rankings, Spain has emerged as a dominant force in women's football. Their recent accolades include winning the 2023 World Cup and the inaugural UEFA Women's Nations League in 2024. With a squad boasting world-class players like two-time Ballon d'Or winners Aitana Bonmati and Alexia Putellas, Spain is considered a team to beat. Putellas acknowledges that the European Championship is the trophy they are missing. According to statisticians, Spain has a 27.2% probability of winning the tournament. The simulation suggests that Spain has benefitted from the tournament draw and may not face really strong teams until the semi-finals.

However, the opening night of the tournament brought a mixed bag of results. Hosts Switzerland suffered a 2-1 defeat against Norway. Despite Nadine Riesen giving Switzerland a deserved lead in the first half, Norway responded with goals from Ada Hegerberg and an own goal to secure the victory. Hegerberg's equalizer was her 50th goal for Norway. Elsewhere in Group A, Finland edged out Iceland 1-0, with Katariina Kosola scoring the decisive goal.

Other teams considered as favorites or strong contenders include England and Germany. England, the reigning champions, are looking to defend their title, but face a challenging group with France and the Netherlands. Germany, with a rich history in the competition, is aiming to continue their redemption arc after a disappointing 2023 World Cup.

Sixteen teams have qualified for the tournament, and they are split into four groups. The top two teams from each group will advance to the knockout stages. The final will be played in Basel on July 27. The host cities for the tournament are Basel, Bern, Geneva, Zurich, St Gallen, Lucerne, Thun and Sion.

The Women's Euro 2025 promises exciting matches and potential upsets. With Spain entering the fray, the competition is set to intensify, and fans can expect a thrilling battle for the title.
