Sarina Wiegman's remarkable leadership of the England women's national team, the Lionesses, has cemented her status as one of the most sought-after coaches in the world. Following England's dramatic semi-final victory against Italy in the Euro 2025, Wiegman has set a new record, becoming the first manager in either men's or women's football to reach five consecutive major international tournament finals.

Wiegman's journey to the top began with her tenure as the head coach of the Dutch national team, where she led them to victory at the UEFA Women's Euro 2017. She continued her impressive run by guiding the Netherlands to the final of the 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup. In August 2020, she signed a four-year contract with the Football Association (FA) to manage the England women's national team, starting in September 2021.

Since taking charge of the Lionesses, Wiegman has achieved unprecedented success. In July 2022, she led England to their first major international trophy at the Euro 2022, with a 2-1 victory over Germany at Wembley Stadium. A year later, she guided England to their first Women's World Cup final, where they narrowly lost to Spain.

The FA has recognized Wiegman's exceptional contributions and moved to secure her future with the team. In January 2024, she signed a contract extension that runs through to the 2027 World Cup. The new terms are believed to make Wiegman one of the best-paid coaches in women's football, with a salary rivaling that of Emma Hayes, the incoming USA coach.

Despite recent struggles that saw England fail to qualify for the Olympics, FA chief executive Mark Bullingham expressed his delight at Wiegman's contract extension. He emphasized her outstanding work as a coach and leader, highlighting the aim for England teams to consistently compete at the highest level in major tournaments.

Wiegman herself has expressed her commitment to the Lionesses, stating that she has "unfinished business" and believes the team is capable of even more. She acknowledged the increasing competitiveness in women's football and embraced the challenge. After the dramatic win over Italy, Wiegman jokingly said that their Euro 2025 campaign would make a great movie. She admitted the team faced serious challenges in the semi-final and felt relief after the late victory. Wiegman praised the impact of substitutes Michelle Agyemang and Chloe Kelly, highlighting their talent and ability to perform under pressure.

As England prepares for the Euro 2025 final against either Germany or Spain, the FA is determined to retain Wiegman's services, regardless of the outcome. Her leadership has transformed the Lionesses into a force to be reckoned with, and the FA views her as an invaluable asset in their pursuit of continued success. Wiegman's strategic substitutions and tactical adjustments throughout the Euro 2025 tournament have demonstrated her coaching prowess. Her ability to inspire and motivate the team has been crucial in overcoming challenges and securing victories. With Wiegman at the helm, England aims to continue their dominance in women's football and achieve further glory in future tournaments.
