Pune police have registered a First Information Report (FIR) against six individuals and several unidentified accomplices for allegedly barging into the Pune residence of a retired Kargil War veteran and demanding proof of citizenship. The incident has sparked outrage and raised concerns about the harassment of military families.
According to reports, the incident occurred late Saturday night in the Chandannagar area of Pune. Irshad Shaikh, the brother of Kargil war veteran Hakimuddin Shaikh, stated that a group of approximately 80 people, allegedly affiliated with a Hindutva organization, arrived at their home, banged on the door, and forcibly entered. The group demanded to see the family's Aadhaar cards and accused them of being Bangladeshis.
Despite the family presenting their documents, the group allegedly dismissed them as fake and insisted that women and children also produce their Aadhaar cards. Irshad Shaikh explained that his family has been residing in the area for the past 60 years and that, in addition to his brother, two of his uncles had also served in the Indian Army. He said that the group was unwilling to listen, hurled abuses, and continued to accuse them of being illegal immigrants.
Hakimuddin Shaikh, the Kargil war veteran, served in the Indian Army from 1984 to 2000 and fought in the Kargil War in 1999. He retired as a Havildar from the Engineers Regiment in 2000. He questioned why his family was being asked to prove their nationality despite his service to the country. Other members of the family had also served in the Indian Army, with one uncle injured in the 1971 war and another fighting alongside Abdul Hameed in the 1965 war.
During the incident, it is alleged that some police personnel in plain clothes were present but remained silent. The family claimed they were told not to file a complaint and to remain silent. However, following the incident, Rahul Dambale, president of the National Conference for Minority, stated that they have sought the registration of an FIR and will meet with the Pune Commissioner of Police to demand action.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Somay Munde stated that the police team visited the house to verify documents as part of a city-wide drive against illegal Bangladeshi nationals. Munde claimed that once it was clear that the family members were Indian, they were allowed to leave, and that the police team was not accompanied by any third party. He also stated that the police have video footage of the inquiry. However, Irshad Shaikh contradicted this account, stating that unknown men kicked their doors and shouted slogans.
Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar has stated that an inquiry is underway and assured that action will be taken if any negligence is found.
