The father of the doctor who was the victim in the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital rape-murder case of August 2024 has approached the Calcutta High Court, seeking permission for his lawyers to visit the crime scene. He believes that individuals beyond the convicted Sanjay Roy were involved in the crime.
Sanjay Roy, a former civic volunteer, was found guilty of the rape and murder of the trainee doctor at the state-run RG Kar Hospital by a Kolkata court. He was sentenced to imprisonment until the end of his natural life by the Sealdah sessions court. The crime, which occurred on August 9, 2024, sparked widespread protests and outrage across the nation.
The victim's father is requesting the High Court to overturn a July 9 order from a lower court in Sealdah that denied his lawyers access to the crime scene. He argues that an independent examination of the location is crucial to uncover any potential oversights in the investigation. He has requested that his lawyer, Phiroze Edulji, along with six junior advocates, be granted two hours to inspect the crime scene at the R G Kar Medical College and Hospital. The matter is expected to be heard by a single bench of the High Court early next week.
The father's pursuit of justice extends beyond the conviction of Sanjay Roy, as he firmly believes that other individuals were present during the commission of the crime. This belief has fueled his determination to seek a thorough and comprehensive investigation, including an independent examination of the crime scene by his legal team.
The parents of the victim have expressed their dissatisfaction with the investigation. They have also alleged that the West Bengal police attempted to suppress the crime initially. The case was eventually handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) under the direction of the Calcutta High Court. While the trial court sentenced Roy to life imprisonment, the CBI is continuing its investigation into the conspiracy angle of the case.
Recently, the victim's father alleged that his wife was assaulted by women police personnel during the Nabanna Abhiyan rally on August 9, 2025, which marked the first anniversary of the crime. He claimed that the Trinamool government orchestrated the assault, drawing parallels to their actions following the initial crime.
The family's pursuit of justice has also involved appeals to higher authorities. The President's office recently acknowledged their appeals for intervention in the investigation and support during the legal process. Despite the challenges and setbacks, the victim's family remains steadfast in their pursuit of a complete and just resolution to the case.
