A massive cloudburst struck Kishtwar, Jammu and Kashmir, on Thursday, August 14, 2025, triggering flash floods and widespread destruction. The disaster occurred in the Chositi village of the Paddar area, a base camp for the annual Machail Mata Yatra, a Hindu pilgrimage. The area was crowded with pilgrims when the cloudburst hit between noon and 1 pm.
The flash floods swept away a community kitchen, security outposts, houses, shops, and vehicles, leaving a trail of devastation. Personal belongings were scattered amidst the debris. Videos circulating online show the moment the flash floods struck, with belongings swept away in the deluge.
The death toll has tragically climbed, with reports indicating at least 45 fatalities. Some reports state the death toll is at 60. Over 100 people have been injured, and many are still missing. Rescue operations are underway, but efforts are being hampered by heavy rain and washed-out roads. Civil, Police, Army, NDRF, and SDRF teams have been mobilized to the affected areas. The Army's 16 Corps has also joined the rescue efforts.
Local volunteers and residents are assisting in the rescue operations. Injured individuals were carried to nearby hospitals. Over 80 people have been brought to safety. As of August 15, 2025, 21 of the recovered bodies have been identified. Authorities shared victims' pictures with affected families to help with identification.
The Prime Minister Narendra Modi has assured all possible help to Jammu and Kashmir. Union Minister Jitendra Singh is expected to visit the site, depending on weather conditions. Rahul Gandhi and Rajnath Singh have expressed condolences to the affected families. Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, Manoj Sinha, has spoken to Home Minister Amit Shah, who assured all possible assistance to the Jammu and Kashmir administration.
The cloudburst has prompted reactions from political leaders and authorities, with rescue and relief operations in full swing. The Machail Mata Yatra has been suspended. The administration has set up a control room and help desk in Paddar to assist those affected.
