Maharashtra has recorded 210 COVID-19 cases since January 2025, with Mumbai accounting for a significant portion of these infections. The recent data indicates a rise in cases, prompting increased surveillance and cautionary statements from health officials.

Current Situation

As of May 2025, Maharashtra has seen a noticeable increase in COVID-19 cases after a period of relative calm. According to the State Surveillance Officer, 210 cases have been reported since January. Of these, a large number are concentrated in Mumbai. In the month of May alone, Mumbai has reported 177 cases out of the total 183 cases in the city. On May 23, 2025, 45 new cases were reported in Maharashtra; out of which 35 were from Mumbai, 4 from Pune and the remaining from Raigad, Kolhapur, Thane and Latur.

Mumbai as the Epicenter

Mumbai has emerged as a key area of concern within Maharashtra. Out of the 210 cases detected since January, a majority can be attributed to Mumbai. Earlier in May, Mumbai had reported 95 cases. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has urged citizens to remain calm, stating that arrangements have been made to accommodate patients and the situation is being closely monitored.

Mortality and Severity

Three COVID-related deaths have been reported till date, all of which have occurred in Mumbai. It's important to note that the individuals who died had pre-existing health conditions. While the numbers are lower than during previous waves, health officials are emphasizing caution, rather than panic. Most of the current cases are reported to be mild, with a smaller number of patients requiring hospitalization.

Response from Authorities

The Maharashtra government has stepped up surveillance to identify COVID-19 cases across the state. The BMC has mandated COVID-19 testing for all patients with Severe Acute Respiratory Illness (SARI) and Influenza-Like Illness (ILI). Furthermore, hospitals in Delhi have been asked to report daily case data and send positive samples for genome sequencing to track variants. Pune Municipal Corporation officials have said that all patients had mild symptoms.

Reasons Behind the Increase

Several factors are believed to be contributing to the recent increase in cases. These include:

  • Emerging Subvariants: The rise in cases is attributed to highly transmissible subvariants such as LF.7 and NB 1.5, part of the JN.1 lineage.
  • Waning Immunity: Protection from previous infections or vaccinations is diminishing over time.
  • Reduced Precautions: People have become more relaxed about taking COVID-19 precautions, such as wearing masks and practicing hand hygiene.

Symptoms and Precautions

Most infected individuals are experiencing mild upper respiratory symptoms, including:

  • Fever
  • Runny nose
  • Sore throat
  • Headaches
  • Fatigue

Health authorities are urging people to maintain hygiene, wear masks in crowded or closed spaces, and avoid unnecessary social gatherings. Those with comorbid conditions should take extra care.

National and Global Context

The increase in COVID-19 cases is not limited to Maharashtra alone. Other states in India, including Kerala and Tamil Nadu, are also reporting a rise in infections. Across Asia, countries like Singapore and Hong Kong are experiencing similar surges.

Current Recommendations

As of now, there are no lockdowns or public movement restrictions in Maharashtra. However, health authorities advise citizens to:

  • Wear masks in crowded or closed spaces.
  • Avoid unnecessary social gatherings.
  • Stay home if feeling unwell.
  • Get tested early if symptoms arise.

While the WHO declared the COVID-19 pandemic over in May 2023, the virus continues to circulate globally. Health experts recommend that vulnerable populations, such as the elderly, pregnant women, and those with underlying health conditions, should remain vigilant and take necessary precautions.
