The Indian stock market will observe closures for Diwali in 2025, but with a special exception for Muhurat Trading. Here’s a breakdown of what investors need to know:
Diwali Market Holidays
The Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and the National Stock Exchange (NSE) will be closed on Tuesday, October 21, 2025, for Diwali Laxmi Puja, and again on Wednesday, October 22, 2025, for Balipratipada. These holidays apply to the equity, equity derivatives, and securities lending (SLB) segments. The commodity derivatives segment of the NSE will also be closed on October 21, 2025.
Muhurat Trading Session
On Tuesday, October 21, 2025, a special one-hour Muhurat trading session will be conducted between 1:45 PM and 2:45 PM. This session marks the start of the new Hindu financial year, Samvat 2082, and is considered auspicious for new ventures. A block deal session will be held from 1:15 PM to 1:30 PM, followed by a pre-open session from 1:30 PM to 1:45 PM.
The Muhurat Trading session is a deviation from the traditional late evening timings. Trading will be permitted across equities, futures and options, currency and commodity derivatives, and securities lending and borrowing (SLB), with modifications allowed until 2:55 PM.
What is Muhurat Trading?
Muhurat Trading is a special trading session held on Diwali, symbolizing the commencement of the new Hindu financial year. It is considered an auspicious time to invest, and many traders and investors participate in this symbolic session.
Which Stocks Can be Traded?
Typically, all active, listed stocks on the NSE and BSE are available for trading during the Muhurat Trading session, with the possible exception of some illiquid stocks, low-volume scrips, and stocks under surveillance. Restrictions may also apply to newly listed IPOs or recently relisted stocks, according to exchange rules. Eligible securities for trade include equities, Futures & Options (F&O), index stocks, currency derivatives, and commodity derivatives. There will be a special pre-open session from 1:30 p.m. to 2:15 p.m. on Diwali 2025 for trading of IPO or relisted stocks.
Additional Market Holidays
The stock market will also be closed on October 18, 2025, for Dhanteras and October 19, 2025, as per the regular weekend schedule.
