The iconic film Sholay, released in 1975, is celebrated for its memorable dialogues, action sequences, and the on-screen chemistry between its cast, including Dharmendra and Hema Malini. Beyond the film's narrative, a charming anecdote from the set has become a part of Bollywood lore, illustrating Dharmendra's efforts to woo Hema Malini.
During the filming of Sholay, Dharmendra was deeply infatuated with Hema Malini. To spend more time with her, he reportedly devised a plan involving the film's spot boys during the shooting of the revolver training scene between their characters, Veeru and Basanti. In this scene, Veeru teaches Basanti how to use a revolver. Dharmendra allegedly paid the spot boys Rs. 20 each to create minor disruptions during the takes. These disruptions ranged from dropping reflectors to misaligning equipment, anything that would prompt a retake. Each retake provided Dharmendra with another opportunity to hug Hema Malini.
Reports suggest that Dharmendra had even established a code with the spot boys. Pulling his ear would signal them to create a blunder with the lights or the trolley, while touching his nose meant the shot was acceptable. Over the course of filming the scene, Dharmendra supposedly spent around Rs. 2,000 on these playful interruptions.
The Sholay crew was amused by Dharmendra's tactics. Hema Malini was reportedly charmed by his gestures. At the time, their off-screen romance was a much-discussed topic in the film industry. Dharmendra's efforts on the set of Sholay only added to the electric chemistry between them.
Dharmendra and Hema Malini first shared screen space in the 1970 film Tum Haseen Main Jawan. Their relationship blossomed despite Dharmendra already being married to Prakash Kaur. The couple married in 1980.
The story of Dharmendra bribing the Sholay crew has become a famous anecdote, embodying the passion and drama of Bollywood.
