Srinagar, November 15, 2025 – A devastating explosion at the Nowgam Police Station in Srinagar on Friday night resulted in the deaths of nine people and injuries to 32 others. Jammu and Kashmir Director General of Police (DGP), Nalin Prabhat, has ruled out any terror angle, stating the blast was accidental.
According to DGP Prabhat, the explosion occurred during the examination of a large quantity of explosive substances, chemicals, and reagents that had been recovered from Faridabad on November 9 and 10. These materials were linked to the unravelling of a Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) interstate terror module and were being stored at the Nowgam Police Station. The police station was initially involved in the case in October after JeM-related posters appeared in the area.
"During the investigation in FIR number 162 of the year 2025 of PS Nowgam, a huge quantity of explosive substances, chemicals, and reagents were also recovered from Faridabad on 9 and 10 November," DGP Prabhat stated. He added that the recovered material was "unstable and sensitive" and was being handled with caution.
The explosives, part of a larger cache of 360 kg recovered from a rented residence in Faridabad, were being sampled as part of the ongoing investigation. The sampling was being conducted by the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL). Due to the large volume of materials, a detailed inspection was necessary. The FSL team was exercising extreme caution due to the sensitivity of the explosives.
The deceased include one personnel from the State Investigation Agency, three members of the forensics team, two crime scene photographers, two revenue officials who were part of the magistrate's team, and one tailor associated with the team. In addition to the fatalities, 27 police personnel, two revenue officials, and three civilians from nearby areas sustained injuries and were immediately taken to the nearest hospital.
The explosion caused severe damage to the police station building and also affected adjacent structures. Windows were shattered in nearby homes, and vehicles were torched. Small, successive explosions hampered immediate rescue operations by the bomb disposal squad.
Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha has ordered a probe into the incident. The J&K Police have dismissed claims of involvement by Pakistan-based terror groups.
DGP Prabhat has urged the public to refrain from speculating about the cause of the explosion as the investigation is underway. He reiterated that the blast was accidental and that any other speculation is unnecessary.
The incident has also brought attention to a past explosion near Delhi's Red Fort, which claimed 11 lives and is linked to the same terror module in Faridabad.
